LA TRUCO
La Truco, strength and mastery in flamenco dance
María Eliezer Truco Pinillos, known artistically as La Truco, is a Madrid-born dancer and teacher with an extensive career in flamenco. Born in Madrid, in the area around the Puerta de Toledo, she grew up closely tied to cante as the daughter of the singer José Truco, developing a deep relationship with this art from a very young age.
Her dance is characterized by strength, technique and a marked stage personality. Especially recognized for her interpretation of taranto and soleá, La Truco has for decades combined her artistic career with an important commitment to teaching and passing on flamenco.
A career dedicated to flamenco dance
La Truco has developed her career both in Spain and on international stages. For years she was a regular presence in emblematic venues of Madrid flamenco and served for 16 years as a teacher at the Escuela Amor de Dios, one of the reference centers for flamenco dance in Madrid.
Throughout her career she has also shared the stage with figures such as José Mercé, Camarón de la Isla, Juan Villar, Fernanda and Bernarda de Utrera or Pansequito, as well as taking part in festivals such as Suma Flamenca. Her path reflects a professional life built around the stage, compás and constant learning.
La Truco's awards and recognitions
Her career has received various recognitions in the world of flamenco. These include the Choreography Prize for the show Remembranzas in 2004, the Premio Signo for her artistic career in 2005 and the Premio Nacional de Baile por Alegrías in 2009.
These awards recognize a career in which La Truco has developed a language of her own, built on knowledge of the traditional forms of flamenco and an interpretation marked by experience, expressiveness and stage command.
La Truco, teacher and transmitter of flamenco
Teaching is another of La Truco’s great facets. After years devoted to teaching, in 2014 she began directing the Instituto Flamenco La Truco, a project created to pass on the dance and the values of flamenco to new generations with rigor, dedication and respect for the profession.
Her method pays special attention to technique and body awareness, an approach that has earned her international recognition as an educator as well. In this way, her legacy is not limited to what happens on a stage, but continues through the many students and professionals who have trained with her.
La Truco at Tablao La Carmela
La Truco is one of the artists linked to Tablao La Carmela, sharing the bill with different generations of dancers, singers and musicians. Her presence represents precisely one of the hallmarks of the tablao: bringing together experience, personality and different ways of performing flamenco on the same stage.
You can get to know other names that are part of the tablao in our Artists section and check the Program to find out who performs each day. You can also book your experience and enjoy live flamenco at Tablao La Carmela.
A style built on experience
La Truco has developed a way of dancing in which technique, elegance, strength and knowledge of traditional flamenco coexist. Her interpretations of taranto and soleá have been especially acclaimed, but her dance also stands out for the expressive use of elements such as the mantón, the bata de cola and the movement of the hands.
After decades devoted to flamenco, that experience is transformed on stage into a mature and personal interpretation. In an intimate space like Tablao La Carmela, the audience can appreciate firsthand the compás, the nuances and the communication established between dance, cante and guitar.
