RAPICO

Rapico, roots and personality in flamenco dance

José Carmona, known artistically as Rapico, is a dancer born in Palma de Mallorca with Andalusian roots. His relationship with flamenco began practically in childhood: his grandmother would lull him to sleep singing soleá and, at only three years old, he found in dance his main form of expression.

Since then he has developed a career marked by constant learning and by a way of dancing that combines respect for tradition, technique and a strong stage personality. During his training he has worked with maestros such as Antonio Canales, Farruquito, José Maya, Alfonso Losa and Manolete, among other references of flamenco dance.

A career tied to the great stages

Rapico began his training while still a child and later broadened his knowledge in Granada and Madrid. Between 2001 and 2008 he continued developing his dance alongside figures such as Farruquito, Alfonso Losa, José Maya, Manuela Carrasco and Luis de Luis. He later moved to the Amor de Dios school in Madrid, one of the reference spaces for flamenco training.

His career has taken him to prominent tablaos, theaters and festivals in Spain and abroad. He has also created his own shows such as Rapikeando, Errante and Tabernero. The latter was presented at Suma Flamenca as a proposal based on recovering traditional flamenco and the atmosphere of the old taverns and cafés cantantes from a contemporary perspective.

Rapico at Tablao La Carmela

Rapico is one of the artists linked to Tablao La Carmela, sharing the space with some of the most prominent names in flamenco today. His presence fits a program in which artists of different generations and different ways of understanding cante, dance and guitar coexist.

You can discover the other performers in our Artists section and check the Program to find out who performs each day. You can also buy your tickets and experience live flamenco in the heart of Madrid.

A dance between tradition and evolution

Rapico’s dance starts from a deep respect for the roots of flamenco, but maintains an artistic search of its own. That restlessness has led him to create and star in different stage productions in which tradition coexists with a contemporary interpretation, without losing the character and essence of flamenco.

His experience in numerous tablaos and stages has helped build a recognizable way of dancing, based on compás, expressiveness and connection with the cante and the guitar. At Tablao La Carmela, that language can be enjoyed with the closeness of a tablao, where every performance becomes a different experience.
