EL TRUCO

El Truco, a new generation of dance with family roots

Cristian Rubio Truco, known artistically as El Truco, was born in Barbate, Cádiz, in 1992. He is the son of the dancer La Truco and the grandson of the singer José Truco, so his relationship with flamenco began within a family environment directly connected to cante and baile.

Following that tradition, he took on his mother’s stage surname and began to build a career of his own. His training combines family transmission with learning alongside maestros of different generations.

Training and growth as a dancer

In his youth he trained with artists such as Alfonso Losa, David Paniagua, Juan Fernández, María Juncal, Cristóbal Reyes and Dagmara Brown, as well as working directly with his mother, La Truco.

That path allowed him to broaden his technical and stage resources without losing his connection to his family roots. In 2024 he received the Premio Fundación AISGE for an Outstanding Dancer at the Certamen de Coreografía de Danza Española y Flamenco.

El Truco at Tablao La Carmela

The tablao format gives the dancer a space in which technique must coexist with the ability to improvise and respond to the rest of the cuadro flamenco. Every llamada, every remate and every silence is built through shared listening.

At Tablao La Carmela, El Truco can develop this combination of energy, compás and personality in a setting where the audience sees up close the physical and emotional force of the dance.

Heritage and personal creation

Belonging to a flamenco family does not make the artistic path automatic. Tradition works as a starting point, but each dancer needs to find his own way of expressing himself.

In El Truco’s case, the training received from his family and from numerous maestros joins a generation of artists who continue to explore new possibilities within flamenco dance.
