MÓNICA FERNÁNDEZ
Mónica Fernández, training, stage and flamenco personality
Mónica Fernández was born in Barcelona and trained in different dance disciplines until earning her qualification at the Real Conservatorio de Danza de Sevilla. Her training includes flamenco, Spanish dance, classical ballet, folklore, escuela bolera and contemporary dance, a broad foundation that has enriched her language as a dancer.
Throughout her training she worked with maestros such as La Chana, Manolete, Manolo Marín, José de la Vega, Ciro, Emma Maleras, Javier Latorre, La China, La Tati, Merche Esmeralda, La Tani and Antonio Canales.
Her own company and collaborations
In 2006 she premiered her own company with the show Antojo, a project she later took on tour to countries such as Egypt, Algeria and Venezuela. At the same time, her career has led her to work with different companies and flamenco figures.
She was lead dancer in Poetas en Nueva York, by Rafael Amargo’s company, and has shared the stage with Antonio Canales and Amador Rojas. She has also taken part in productions by Tito Losada and has worked in choreography, television and teaching.
Mónica Fernández at Tablao La Carmela
Her broad training and her experience in very different formats find in the tablao a space of synthesis. Here technique is placed at the service of a direct relationship with the music and of an interpretation that must adapt to each moment.
At Tablao La Carmela, Mónica Fernández’s dance is part of a cuadro where the cante and the guitar do not accompany from a distance, but build the development of each piece together with the dancer.
Versatility in the service of flamenco
Her career shows how diverse training can enrich flamenco dance without diluting its identity. Experience in Spanish, classical and contemporary dance provides tools, while the compás and the relationship with the cante keep the flamenco core of the interpretation.
This combination of discipline, experience and stage ability defines a career built among the company, the tablao, creation and teaching.
