EL FARRU
El Farru: Heritage and Personality in Flamenco Dance
El Farru, the stage name of Antonio Fernández Montoya, was born in Seville in 1988 into one of flamenco’s most renowned families. He is the grandson of the legendary Farruco, the son of dancer La Farruca and singer Juan “El Moreno,” and the brother of Farruquito and El Carpeta. From childhood, he grew up surrounded by dance, singing, and guitar, learning flamenco as a natural form of expression and family life.
His career represents the continuation of a historic flamenco dynasty, but also a highly personal way of understanding the stage. His work combines respect for tradition, improvisation, and an artistic vision that extends beyond dance. In addition to being a flamenco dancer, he has developed his skills as a choreographer, composer, singer, and guitarist, showing a deep and complete relationship with flamenco music.
A Childhood Surrounded by Leading Flamenco Artists
His connection with the stage began at a very young age. He made his debut as a child in Bodas de Gloria, a production directed by his grandfather Farruco that brought together fiction, reality, and flamenco tradition. That experience marked the beginning of a career shaped within a family where art was passed down from one generation to the next.
His grandfather’s influence was particularly significant. Farruco did not only teach him technique, but also a philosophy based on truth, natural expression, and the importance of using dance to convey emotion. That way of understanding flamenco remains present in El Farru’s performances through his command of rhythm, elegance, strength, and willingness to leave space for the unexpected.
His learning process was also linked to other major flamenco figures. Throughout his career, he has shared the stage with artists such as Antonio Canales and accompanied Paco de Lucía for several years on tours through some of the world’s leading theatres. That period alongside the guitarist became an important turning point in his artistic journey and later inspired projects influenced by Paco de Lucía’s teachings.
An Artist Who Goes Beyond Dance
One of the most recognisable characteristics of El Farru’s work is his versatility. In performances presented at venues such as the Teatro Real, he has not only danced, but also played the guitar and used his voice. This ability to combine different disciplines expands his stage language and allows him to create productions in which flamenco appears as a living, open, and deeply personal experience.
Improvisation also plays an important role in his artistic vision. For El Farru, the essence of flamenco lies in sharing without competing and allowing every artistic encounter to become something unique. His dancing is based on solid training and a deep knowledge of tradition, but he avoids imitation and seeks to express his own voice.
This understanding of flamenco is also present in projects such as Natural, presented at the Festival de Jerez, where he was credited as a dancer, choreographer, and composer. The title reflects an idea closely linked to his career: returning to spontaneity and presenting flamenco without unnecessary artifice.
