IVÁN VARGAS
Iván Vargas: Strength and Flamenco Roots on Stage
Iván Vargas is a flamenco dancer from Granada with strong ties to Sacromonte and the Los Maya family, a flamenco dynasty that includes important names such as Mario Maya, Manolete, and Juan Andrés Maya. He took his first steps in dance at Cueva de La Rocío, his family’s venue, where flamenco formed part of his life from an early age.
His career represents an understanding of flamenco in which family heritage is not preserved as something static. Instead, those roots are transformed on stage through an intense and expressive style connected to the present. This identity has taken him to tablaos, theatres, and festivals, as well as to his own artistic projects in which Sacromonte remains an essential source of inspiration.
A Life Connected to Flamenco from Childhood
Iván Vargas began his training within his own family and later continued at the Mario Maya Performing Arts Centre. He also developed his technique alongside artists such as El Güito, Alejandro Granados, Rafaela Carrasco, and Manuel Liñán. He began taking part in performances at an early age and appeared on stage in Madrid while he was still a child.
His artistic development combines two complementary dimensions: the direct transmission of flamenco within a family of performers and technical training with masters from different generations. The result is a style recognised for its energy, command of rhythm, and ability to convey emotion without losing its connection to its origins.
On Tablao La Carmela’s Artists page, his name appears alongside figures such as Juan Andrés Maya, Remedios Amaya, Antonio Canales, El Farru, Alba Heredia, and La Lupi. The tablao presents him as one of the artists who have performed on a stage dedicated to live flamenco every day.
From Sacromonte to Major Stages
Throughout his career, Iván Vargas has taken part in productions that reveal different aspects of his artistic language. At the Teatro Real, he presented Flamenco de raíz, a production built around his own choreography and pieces created by masters such as Manolete and Juan Andrés Maya. The show brought together two generations of flamenco dance from Granada and paid tribute to the artists who shaped their respective careers.
He has also participated in projects in which flamenco enters into dialogue with other artistic disciplines. In Hechizo y Duende, performed alongside Dúo Cassadó, flamenco dance was combined with classical music, poetry, and video projections in a tribute to Federico García Lorca. His ability to work with different artistic languages shows an openness to new contexts without abandoning his flamenco identity.
Iván Vargas at Tablao La Carmela
Watching a dancer like Iván Vargas in a tablao makes it possible to appreciate details that can be lost in larger venues: his breathing, the precision of his footwork, the clapping, and the communication between dance, singing, and guitar. The proximity of the stage turns every movement into part of a direct experience that is difficult to reproduce outside live flamenco.
Iván Vargas’s appearances can be checked on Tablao La Carmela’s Program, where the artists scheduled for each date are published. As the cast changes depending on the day, it is advisable to check the official line-up before making a reservation.
Visitors who wish to attend can review the schedule first and then book through the official Tickets page. They can also complete the evening by exploring the tablao’s traditional Spanish Gastronomy.
